Hey Everyone, It’s The 300th On Tap And We’re Taking It Easy With This Light, Inoffensive American Light Lager — Controversial, Yet Brave.

Welcome to On Tap! Each week in this recurring feature, we’ll take an in-depth look at one of the many beers available in the crowded North Texas brew scene. The goal here is to look at these area beers without our local goggles on, and to wonder aloud, “Is this beer good or do I just like it because it’s local?” Let’s find out! Cheers!

This week I sipped on Rollertown Light from Rollertown Beerworks.

Overview

Three Hundred!!! (Ok, so that’s an inside racquetball joke that only 2 guys in the world will get and one of them doesn’t drink beer so he won’t even read this but I had to. You understand, right?)

This is the 300th edition of the On Tap beer review which started out with a critique of Peticolas’ Royal Scandal in the summer of 2013. Through almost 9 years, 4 writers, 66 breweries (18 of them now defunct), and 299 different beers – here we are.

But hey, this is still a beer review column and not about us. Amazingly, for the fourth column in a row, I’m hitting a new brewery. This week, I hit Richardson’s newest beer joint, Cultura Taphouse at City Line, and I had Rollertown Light from the Celina brewery of the same name, started by local radio legends Ben & Skin.

Background on American Light Lager

American Light Lager is something of a dirty phrase in craft beer circles. It’s a creation of Big Beer and now the single most consumed style in the world but is often referred to by derogatory names like “fizzy water”. It is traditionally brewed with 6-row barley which got used by early brewers in this country because it grew better in North America than the 2-row that was more widely used in Europe. However, 6-row barley is missing certain enzymes necessary for full conversion of starch to sugar which necessitated the use of adjuncts, either rice or corn, to complete that conversion in the mash. The inclusion of these adjuncts give us the thinner beer we now associate with macro breweries.

An American Light Lager should be pale straw to pale gold in color, sport a fairly neutral palate lacking in strong flavors, and have a very light, almost watery body. For more information on the style take a look at our review of Sex in a Canoe from Noble Rey.

Appearance

Rollertown Light pours a beautiful gold color with a fluffy white head. While the gold is darker than I typically expect in this style, it is crystal clear and quite stunning. The foam goes missing in a hurry and leaves no real lacing on the glass but neither is really a surprise for the style.

Aroma

Shy and unobtrusive might be overstating the aroma of Rollertown Light. I can’t say there isn’t an aroma because there is — but there isn’t much. I get a light, grainy sweetness out of the glass chased with a bit of cooked corn and hay. Rollertown’s description mentions lemon peel, but I didn’t find it. All in all, though, the aroma is mostly inconspicuous.

Flavor

Rollertown Light is passive in terms of flavor with a mild sweetness. There are hints of plain cracker and white bread dough, but it is nearly neutral and certainly devoid of anything strong or dominant. Crisp, light, and very easy drinking, with a short and slightly sweet finish, this flirts with coming across as a beer-flavored seltzer.

Mouthfeel

Rollertown Light is exactly that – light. The beer itself is low bodied, somewhat watery, with most of the punch coming from the bite provided by the high carbonation level.

Pairing

Rollertown Light makes a great beer for a day at the ballpark to watch some baseball or a day on the boat where fishing and swimming with friends is the whole agenda.

Overall Impression

Honestly, Rollertown Light is pretty much exactly what I expected from the name and the style. It straddles the line between macro and craft, providing a great gateway beer for that Coors Light drinker who fears anything craft because they once got blind sided by a friend with a double IPA, while also providing a solid, locally brewed light beer for the hardcore craft beer folks.

Should my notes above sound harsh, remember the style here. It isn’t supposed to be strong or bold. It is a beer designed to be inoffensively plain and because of that, carry a broad appeal.

It takes a certain amount of self confidence to brew a beer like this because it’s tough. Without any strong flavors to grab attention, any flaw presents itself for inspection to even the most casual drinker. In this case, that flaw is the corn in the aroma and the flavor. While it was tolerable and likely within style fresh off the tap when the beer was at its coldest, after a few minutes the cooked corn started to get more noticeable and quickly got above what I consider an acceptable level.

Still, a brave choice by the folks at Rollertown and they get kudos for dropping a beer in a locally underrepresented style that is often maligned by the mainstream craft crowd.

Score

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Rollertown Light a 6.
