Let’s Take This Crushable Collaboration Between The Dallas Design District Brewery And The Iconic Arlington Metal Band For A Walk. What Do You Say?

Welcome to On Tap! Each week in this recurring feature, we’ll take an in-depth look at one of the many beers available in the crowded North Texas brew scene. The goal here is to look at these area beers without our local goggles on, and to wonder aloud, “Is this beer good or do I just like it because it’s local?” Let’s find out! Cheers!

This week, I sipped on Pantera Golden Ale from Texas Ale Project.

Fast Facts About Pantera Golden Ale.

Overview.

Collaborations are nothing new in the craft beer world. They have been around for decades now. Usually, it’s two breweries combining separate ideas to come up with a single great new beer, or maybe a couple of breweries getting behind a single origin brewery to support a great cause (think Black Is Beautiful from Weathered Souls or Sierra Nevada’s Resilience IPA).

Design District brewery Texas Ale Project’s collaboration with Arlington-sprung metal legends Pantera isn’t the first time a brewery and a band have gotten together on a beer– Fort Worth’s Toadies and Martin House Brewing Company have worked together a few times now — but actually drinking one of these is a first for me.

The story here is that back in the day, Pantera was known for partying (just a little), which often meant a fair amount of easy-drinking, crushable craft beers being kept in the mix. With that as a backdrop, these two local DFW institutions coming together to create an approachable and refreshing golden ale makes a lot of sense.

Background on Golden Ale.

This style, first brewed in the mid-1980s, is young by English standards, where styles can go back centuries. It was originally brewed as an answer to the lagers that were being aggressively pushed to the English pub-goer at the time. It is designed as more of a hop showcase than typical English beers, using mostly pale malt as a base and lacking many of the malt flavors that are so common in British ales. While English hops are often used, the style has morphed over time to include use American hops as well. In fact, versions brewed in England today are as likely to use American hops as they are British varieties.

Appearance.

Pantera pours true to its Golden Ale name, filling the glass with a yellow-gold beer crystal that’s clear enough to read through — and topped by a luscious head of white foam. The foam stand has real staying power too, hanging around at near full height for five or six minutes before beginning a gradual collapse back to the fluid surface. Once gone, though, it is really gone, leaving only a thin circle of fine bubbles adhering to the glass. Early on, the head leaves traces of fine lacing on the glass — but, sadly, that doesn’t last to the end of the beverage.

Aroma.

True to style, Pantera highlights the hops without being heavy-handed. While the grapefruit and lime notes are obvious enough to ensure the drinker knows American hops were used, the floral aromas are even more pronounced. That all adds up to this beer smelling like a glass full of spring. But there is also a slightly harsh, astringent thing happening — like someone opened a household cleaner a couple of rooms over. While it doesn’t ruin things by any means, it is a bit distracting.

Flavor.

This beer has a rich, slightly more complex flavor than I expected, owing to the malt making a stronger-than-usual appearance for the style. The light breadiness of the malt makes a great platform to show off the grapefruit, lime and lightly fruity flavors in the hops. Again, though, there is a touch of that same astringency found in the aroma, probably boosted a bit by the bite from the higher-than-average level of carbonation. Again, while it creates a touch of mayhem in the mouth, it isn’t a showstopper.

Mouthfeel.

Pantera has a medium-light body with medium heavy carbonation. There is a slight slickness to it on the tongue and cheeks but it’s pretty clean overall. The finish is medium-short, with the bite from the carbonation leaving more of a lasting impression in the mouth than the beer itself.

Pairing.

When pairing Pantera with food, don’t let its British origins fool you. This beer is something of a cousin of American Pale Ale and my recommendation is to treat it as such at the table. Pub fair of all sorts from wings to burgers to loaded fries will go well with this beer. The high carbonation level will be a faithful servant for cleaning up behind even the greasiest of dishes. This beer will also go well Texas summers, pool parties, innertube trips down the river and long-overdue backyard barbecue get-togethers.

Overall Impression.

Much like Pantera the band, Pantera the beer is an original and unique here to the local beer scene. All too often, North Texas breweries just crank out their latest version of the much-hyped, easier-to-brew hazy IPAs and adjunct-laden stouts. Hey, I get it: Those are popular, and breweries have to pay the bills too.

Pantera isn’t either of those things, though! This is a clean beer that took an exacting level of skill to produce — precisely because it doesn’t have all that extra stuff thrown in. In short, this is a beer; it’s not a cocktail or dessert tray masquerading as a beer.

For that reason, I like it. In fact, I like it a lot.

Granted, this beer isn’t without its flaws, and I could do without that light astringent taste. But, even so, this beer is likely to keep turning up in my fridge for as long as Texas Ale Project keeps brewing it – especially as the weather here in the Metroplex takes a turn for the warmer.

Score.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Texas Ale Project’s Pantera Golden Ale a 7.
