Overview
Turning Point Beer is the first brewery in the HEB area northeast of Fort Worth. It has been open now for just over 18 months, so you are to be forgiven if the name is new to you. Depending on how far you are from the Bedford brewery, you may have difficulty finding its brews outside of your local growler shop. A quick look at the beer list on Untappd shows a heavy emphasis on trendier styles, such as hazy IPAs and sours with over half the full beer list falling into these two categories.

This is another brewery that appears to be staying away from the traditional idea of a core line of beers that you can get whenever you visit, rather than going all in on the idea of constant change, creating something new more often than brewing the same recipe over again.

Silent Treatment — one of Turning Point’s many New England IPA offerings — catches the eye from jump, as it boldly proclaims “0 IBUs” on the menu hanging above the taps. Upon querying the beertender, we learned the zero IBU claim comes about from using hops during fermentation only – none go in the boil.

Background on New England IPA
New England IPA (or NEIPA for short) is all about the character of the hop in both aroma and taste. It is about bold smells and big flavors, all exclusively from more recent American and New World hop varietals. (For those wondering, New World in the beer world refers to Australia and New Zealand, so these hops are from down under.) These hops, when used late in the boil and added during fermentation, will impart intense fruit flavors and aromas – think stone fruit, tropical fruit and citrus.

NEIPA is a bit of an oxymoron among beer styles because nothing about it is remotely close to the traditional IPA style. It has a soft, smooth feel in the mouth with low-to-zero bitterness. Terms like hazy and turbid are most often used to describe the appearance of a NEIPA — these beers are never clear. The overriding features of such styles have led to a general description of “juicy,” something no self-respecting American IPA would ever put up with.

Appearance
Silent Treatment, with its opaque orange color and creamy head, screams NEIPA the second you lay eyes on it. If this had been served in a rocks or Tom Collins glass, it would be nothing so much as no-pulp OJ. The head isn’t as full as expected for the style and it dissipates much more quickly than it should.

Aroma
Boom! This is like getting hit in the face with a citrus bomb. It is all orange and grapefruit – so much so, that if this were dropped in front of you without any information about it at all, it would be tough to distinguish it as beer. There is a sweetness on the nose, too, but it’s difficult to tell whether from the malt or from intense citrus notes. Turning Point has totally succeeded in making hops the star of the show here.

Flavor
Silent Treatment, like nearly every NEIPA, tastes like the unholy lovechild of a Screwdriver – the cocktail, not the tool – and a Kolsch or blonde ale. It is mostly sweet citrus with some faint, bready highlights and flirty tartness that is barely noticeable. The big orange and grapefruit flavors serve as an effective mask for the 8.6 percent ABV, making it disappear completely in an almost dangerous way. It also lives up to the zero IBU claim, as there isn’t any perceived bitterness. For all the apparent sweetness up front, this beer finishes clean and off-dry, leaving your mouth refreshed.

Mouthfeel
Here too, Silent Treatment is mostly true to style. It is smooth and full, with a medium carbonation that nips at the sides of the tongue. This beer has a luxurious, creamy feel to it, which is where it deviates from style. You can almost feel it look down on its surroundings like it thinks it’s better than the other beer in taproom.

Pairing
On the food front, this style is a total departure from the standard IPA fair. Its soft mouth, big fruit punch and total lack of bitterness pull it away from the normal pub grub you so often find next to any IPA. Try it with chicken piccata and asparagus – the lemon in the chicken will pull out some of the slightly tart notes in the beer while the mouthfeel of the beer and asparagus will compliment each other. Chicken or fish done with a Caribbean feel will likely work well too, as the bright spices will pop against the fruity beer, while the juicy sweetness will calm any heat the spices bring.

Overall Impression
If you are a fan of NEIPAs, and so many are today, Silent Treatment is worth looking up, as is Turning Point Beer. When we visited, half the beers on the board were hazy IPAs of varying strengths and features. In fact, of the thirteen brews on tap, all but three were either sours or hazy IPAs, which gives you an idea where Turning Point wants to focus.

We enjoyed Silent Treatment and loved the focus on the hops. While grapefruit has really been overdone in the last few years, this had a nice balance with the orange we enjoyed. We’re guessing the lush creaminess of the beer was out of style and likely the result of not using hops in the boil. The head really should have been bigger and lasted longer. We don’t know if Turning Point will brew this beer again or not, but on the strength of Silent Treatment, any of the brewery’s juicy IPAs should hit the mark.

Score
On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Silent Treatment from Turning Point Beer a 7.
