If you’ve ever gone out for Chinese food, you’ve probably been served one of these very not-Chinese fortune cookies to top off your meal. Let’s face it, you’re probably not eating these cardboard-y treats for the flavor. You’re after the paper fortune inside, with its tidbit of wisdom, lucky number and/or lessons in Mandarin.

The blog fivethirtyeight did a detailed, scientific examination of exactly how accurate those lucky numbers and fortunes really are and found that most of fortunes from the cookies actually not very predictive.

Most of them focus on tidbits of advice for “you” and less than a quarter actually make any kind of prediction. Oh, and those lucky numbers aren’t very lucky. Who’d have guessed that, huh?
