Just Because Natural Anthem Is Paranoid Doesn't Mean They're Not Out To Get No. 13.

Just as we have at the end of the last two years, the Central Track staff has once again spent the last week reminiscing and pouring pretty tirelessly over the best locally-tied songs of the year. By now, of course, most folks expect as much from their local culture publications. Unlike in previous years, though, we've decided to do things a little differently in 2014. For one, the influx of notable tunes this year prompted us to double the length of our list — from the Top 50 to the Top 100 local songs of the year. At the same time, we didn't want to overwhelm our readers with a huge list of 100 tracks to take in all once, either. To that end, we're going to roll the thing out in daily chunks, unveiling more songs every weekday through the end of the month. It should serve to make the thing a little easier to digest — and give you time to check out the embedded streams of anything you might have missed throughout the course of the year. Really, though, you should give each of these songs a spin. They all deserve at least that much.

There's not a whole out there about Fort Worth newcomers Natural Anthem.

And that's pretty much by design.

Comprised of Daniel Slatton and Jake Murphy — better known , perhaps, as the co-founders and chief songwriters of the jangly Americana act The Will Callers — Natural Anthem only put out its debut EP in September, and has yet to play a single live show.

But, before Natural Anthem finally does perform — the band's said that should come in early 2015, optimally as a five-piece — it's been pretty mum on what it's doing to gear up for those shows.

What we do know is that this group's not going to sound anything like the duo's previous outfit. And that, too, is by design. Unlike the folk and country undertones that characterized so much of The Will Callers' 2013, Ray Wylie Hubbard-produced debut LP, Natural Anthem finds Slatton and Murphy shifting towards the world of psych-tinged dream-pop and '60s throwback rock — so much so that a name change proved itself necessary.

Despite the band's lack of skins on the wall, though, we couldn't help but be won over by the laidback atmospherics of lead single, “Paranoid.”

The reverb-heavy, retro-leaning groove is reminiscent of a more upbeat, less forlorn take on Chris Isaak's “Wicked Game.” Sure, those missing elements were precisely what makes Isaak's song one of the greatest ever committed to tape — but, nevertheless, “Paranoid” is an impressive thing in its own right.

In any case, it's far and away the standout track from one of the year's best debut albums.
