At No. 10, We’re Buying What Medasin Is Selling.

This time of year, it’s become a bit of a tradition around here for us to not only count down the last few pages on the calendar, but also the best songs to come out of North Texas in the past 12 months. As I think we’ve shown in years past, the results are pretty much always diverse, with a few seemingly out-of-left-field choices in some pretty high-ranking slots. This year, in a countdown that will be unveiled in chunks day by day for the rest of the year, you’ll find some Grammy nominees alongside brand new bands that just started up this year, as well as some high school acts and, well, everything else in between. The one thing they have in common? They all put out fire in 2016.

With last year’s Pink Polo EP that he lovingly handcrafted alongside rapper Masego, 19-year-old Richardson resident Medasin pioneered a new genre dubbed TrapHouseJazz. This year, the producer followed that up with an effort that proved his marketing prowess to be just as on point as his beat-crafting skills.

Back in the spring, Medasin began hawking his second drum kit (he’s since released a third one, too) by taking to SoundCloud (where he’s amassed over 94K followers) to announce its arrival. So, in that sense, the song at No. 10 on our countdown of the year’s best tracks isn’t necessarily one meant to be taken at face value. At the same time, Medasin’s production is so top-notch (it’s no wonder, really that people would want to buy his sound kits), and the witticisms dropped atop them by collaborator Josh Pan so clever, that there’s no shame in cuing up this advertisement whenever.

It jams hard.

But, OK, there’s another reason we keep coming back to it, too.

In the track, released eight months ago, Pan asks what the listener thinks of Donald Trump in 2016 and then makes the following bold prediction before asking us to come back in seven months to see if he was right: “Obama is the last president. There will be no election, 100 percent guaranteed.”

Looks like he owes somebody $250 for that one.

Something tells me neither of these dudes is sweating it. As Pan quips elsewhere, I hear you can make a lot of money selling drumkits.

“It just goes to show,” he muses, “making a sound pack will probably make you more money than making an EP.”

He’s not wrong. And it’s just that type of forward thinking that’s helped Medasin not only blaze a trail down never-before-heard genres but adapt to the kind of business models required to survive in the current era of SoundClouds and sample packs — all before the age of 20.

Of course, it always helps if you’re selling something that’s worth buying.
