This Week, Old 97's Went All The Way.

Each week, we take a survey of the local music scene and try to determine which acts in town are really putting in work and seeing it pay off. Which bands have the most intriguing shows coming up? Which bands are getting the most press around town? Which bands have accomplished the most notable feats of late? Based off these criteria, our music writers submit a list to be weighted and compiled into a master list revealed each week in this here space. We like to think it's fairly revealing. Check out our previous Buzz Rankings here.

There were a lot of lackluster local festival announcements this week — but also one pretty killer one. As for that one, it was news of the brand new Old 97's County Fair, which sounds kinda like the band's own version of Dia de los Toadies, but with a Ferris wheel.

Anyway, the news was enough to earn the band its eighth Buzz No. 1 of all-time, putting it in a pretty elite class.

Other locals set to play that affair include Madison King and Brent Best. Also, not to be outdone, the band's frontman, Rhett Miller, penned a Bowie memorial piece for Salon this week.

Similarly, multiple members of The Polyphonic Spree also memorialized Bowie, an old tourmate of theirs, in the pages of various media. And Don Henley did the same for his late bandmate, Glenn Frey.

In this week's big show news, Kacey Musgraves headlines The Majestic tonight, Azalea Project headlined Dada last weekend, Sarah Jaffe headlines a pair of Denton shows this weekend, and Jacob Metcalf and Danny Diamonds headline album release shows over the weekend, too.

Speaking of new releases, folks like Lecrae, Oh Boy Prince, Senor Fin and Pleasant Grove each put out new albums and singles.

Elsewhere: Lily Taylor took over booking at Crown and Harp; Decadent Dub Team announced a reunion show; and John Congleton wrote the theme to a new television show.
