Digital Witness Turned St. Vincent Into A Star at No. 12.

Just as we have at the end of the last two years, the Central Track staff has once again spent the last week reminiscing and pouring pretty tirelessly over the best locally-tied songs of the year. By now, of course, most folks expect as much from their local culture publications. Unlike in previous years, though, we've decided to do things a little differently in 2014. For one, the influx of notable tunes this year prompted us to double the length of our list — from the Top 50 to the Top 100 local songs of the year. At the same time, we didn't want to overwhelm our readers with a huge list of 100 tracks to take in all once, either. To that end, we're going to roll the thing out in daily chunks, unveiling more songs every weekday through the end of the month. It should serve to make the thing a little easier to digest — and give you time to check out the embedded streams of anything you might have missed throughout the course of the year. Really, though, you should give each of these songs a spin. They all deserve at least that much.

From the minute we first heard “Digital Witness” in the very first week of 2014, we knew it was probably going to be a big year for St. Vincent.

We were right, turns out. With three critically-adored LPs and a David Byrne collaboration already under her belt, the former Polyphonic Spree guitarist's self-titled record was the one that finally put her on the map in a huge way.

And how.

Back then, here's what we had to say: “Our initial reaction says Ms. Clark just might have turned in her most well-rounded effort to date. The early album of the year contender is many things at once; it's gentle yet terrifying, organic but full of electricity, biting yet accessible. And there's a better than zero chance that this is the one that finally makes her a huge star.”

We didn't really know how prophetic those words would prove to be. To wit: In the months that followed, the shredder fronted Nirvana; filled in for Fred Armisen and served as the bandleader for Late Night With Seth Meyers; toured with the Black Keys; and baffled television audiences with her dance moves during an episode of Saturday Night Live.

For its part, “Digital Witness” holds up, too. We've heard it about a million times this year, but never really gotten sick of it. There's just a lot about the song to like, from the digitized drum beats to the syncopated, Byrne-influenced horn section that does much of the heavy lifting. The interaction between these elements also helps the track sound at once modern and timeless.

We're far from the only ones to have fallen hard for the sound, either. Slant Magazine, NME and The Guardian all called St. Vincent the best album of the year. The disc was also No. 2 on Paste and Time's lists, and a Top 10 finisher in A.V. Club, Rolling Stone, MOJO, Time Out New York and Complex's respective lists. To top things off, the album even earned a Grammy nod.

A star was born, indeed.
