The Cannabinoids And The Outfit, TX Clean Up At No. 9.

Just as we have at the end of the last two years, the Central Track staff has once again spent the last week reminiscing and pouring pretty tirelessly over the best locally-tied songs of the year. By now, of course, most folks expect as much from their local culture publications. Unlike in previous years, though, we've decided to do things a little differently in 2014. For one, the influx of notable tunes this year prompted us to double the length of our list — from the Top 50 to the Top 100 local songs of the year. At the same time, we didn't want to overwhelm our readers with a huge list of 100 tracks to take in all once, either. To that end, we're going to roll the thing out in daily chunks, unveiling more songs every weekday through the end of the month. It should serve to make the thing a little easier to digest — and give you time to check out the embedded streams of anything you might have missed throughout the course of the year. Really, though, you should give each of these songs a spin. They all deserve at least that much.

Red Bull and The Outfit, TX seem like something of an odd pairing.

While the former is known, first and foremost, as an energy drink, the latter tends to send us the opposite direction. Besides, the Dallas hip-hop trio is much more well-known for filling their collective cups with other things, like Jolly Ranchers and/or Purple Diamond Tea.

And yet The Outfit did find itself pairing with Red Bull a number of times this year, performing at Sound Select shows in Atlanta and Austin, in addition to September's Isaiah Rasha-headlined affair at Trees. There was also another seven-date, Red Bull Sound Select-sponsored tour of The South that saw The Outfit playing support to Run The Jewels.

The fast-rising, local favorites were all about making things work this year. To wit: Even though, to date, most of the group's production has been produced in-house, they were quick to jump on a beat crafted by Erykah Badu's backing production crew, The Cannanbinoids, earlier this year. Fittingly, the song premiered on Red Bull's site back in September.

Said The Cannabinoids member Picnictyme at the time: “'Spic & Span' was tailor made for The Outfit, TX. They're also producers on their own so it was a rare opportunity to have them create over other people's beats. Creating the song came easy after performing with them at a Red Bull Sound Select show and building that relationship. They were just as excited to make a track as we were. We just pretty much threw them the beat and trusted that they'd do what they do best… and they did.”

The pairing is one that paid off big time, resulting in a soundtrack-worthy cut that works well with both spectrum's of The Outfit's dynamic: The Cannabinoids' production is able to hold its own against JayHawk's more aggressive, Danny Brown-like flow, while not overshadowing Mel's trademark, syrupy delivery.

Meaning? Well, this plus-sized collective of Dallas talent has crafted a track suited to getting the party started and to soundtrack some hungover cleaning up the morning after.

We, of course, mean that in a good way.
