Danny Diamonds Brings The Heat with At No. 10.

Just as we have at the end of the last two years, the Central Track staff has once again spent the last week reminiscing and pouring pretty tirelessly over the best locally-tied songs of the year. By now, of course, most folks expect as much from their local culture publications. Unlike in previous years, though, we've decided to do things a little differently in 2014. For one, the influx of notable tunes this year prompted us to double the length of our list — from the Top 50 to the Top 100 local songs of the year. At the same time, we didn't want to overwhelm our readers with a huge list of 100 tracks to take in all once, either. To that end, we're going to roll the thing out in daily chunks, unveiling more songs every weekday through the end of the month. It should serve to make the thing a little easier to digest — and give you time to check out the embedded streams of anything you might have missed throughout the course of the year. Really, though, you should give each of these songs a spin. They all deserve at least that much.

No matter what genre he's tried his hand at over the years — and he's tried plenty, from the prolific glut indie-folk gems he released early on his career to the drug-fueled countrified numbers he released under his Danny Rush & the Designated Drivers moniker — it's always been clear that Daniel Folmer's known how to craft a pop song. More than that, the one consistency tying his varied works together, it seems, is his persistence at penning, oft-morose lyrics regarding some particular bit of despair he's currently undergoing — well, that or his penchant for self-destructive behaviors.

So, no, Folmer's move this year to make yet another sonic shift — this time into the world of slightly crunchy, mid-'90s-leaning power pop under his new Danny Diamonds persona — wasn't all that earth-shattering. For that matter, neither was the fact that his first single, “Hot Summer,” was full of casually detached references at blowing out his brains or slitting his wrists.

Of course, over upbeat guitar riffs and sunny, throwback harmonies of the track's backing vocals, those allusions to suicide go almost unnoticed — through several repeated listens, at least.

Fortunately, repeated listens is just what “Hot Summer” demands.

It's a memorable track, to be sure. And it boasts the same kind of instantly half-remembered melodies and vaguely familiar attributes that made Fountains of Wayne's 1999 Utopia Parkway LP so recognizable and hard to shake from the first listen on. Unlike that album, though, Folmer's not hampered by a lack of emotional depth — no matter how casually he sings about his own mortality.

Overall, it's just a perfectly-crafted pop song. And, locally in North Texas at least, it's without question the best of its kind from this year.

Because it was a hot summer — oh yeah — and one we can't help but remember fondly every time we hear this song.
