Event Details

Deep Ellum Art Co. presents “Big Chief,” a solo exhibition by the ElectricSteve Cruz, from 6-8pm, on Thursday, Feb 8th, .

Steve Cruz is an incorrigible autodidact artist who squanders a great deal of his precious time perusing low life pleasures with his nefarious “friends”. Sometimes he makes “art,” which engages issues of sin, transgression, gender conflict and sexual intrigue. There is a recurrent cast of characters that meander through his pictures that include: “Jesus,” Minotaur, Devil Girl, Devil Man, and Santos. These characters are often engaged in questionable scenarios meant to exasperate and confound the viewer.

There is also a tawdry erotic element that runs through his images that is often inappropriate, but hardly titillating, due to the bent humor that permeates his oeuvre. He employs a great deal of raucous color in his compositions, which he recognizes as anathema to refined upper-class good taste. Strangely, he is meticulous in his craft and technique, laboring painstakingly on endeavors of low consequence, an attribute of many unsung artists. The great message that might be derived from the “art” of Steve Cruz is: Don’t misread somber for serious, and always deflate the inflatables and pompous and self important.

The “Big Chief” opening reception will be followed by dubstep beastsBoogie T. & SQUNTO at 9pm, $12 advanced, $20 at the door.
Steve Cruz is an Oak Cliff based artist of dubious distinction whose notoriety precedes him. He has managed to show his work in numerous venues across Texas from the low down greasy to the slick and upscale, His work has a signature florid style and has themes that address the issues of sin and moral transgressions, topics the artist is well versed in. He is also owner/operator of Mighty Fine Arts Gallery in Oak Cliff and a Board Member of Wordspace. mighty fine arts www.wordspace.us
