Post Malone Broaches Familiar Territory at No. 5.

This time of year, it’s become a bit of a tradition around here for us to not only count down the last few pages on the calendar, but also the best songs to come out of North Texas in the past 12 months. As I think we’ve shown in years past, the results are pretty much always diverse, with a few seemingly out-of-left-field choices in some pretty high-ranking slots. This year, in a countdown that will be unveiled in chunks day by day for the rest of the year, you’ll find some Grammy nominees alongside brand new bands that just started up this year, as well as some high school acts and, well, everything else in between. The one thing they have in common? They all put out fire in 2016.

In 2015, with less than 500 followers on Twitter at the time, Post Malone broke out in a big way with his “White Iverson” single. Not long after that, he blew way the fuck up, landing an opening slot on Justin Bieber’s tour and earning a guest spot on Kanye West’s critically hailed The Life of Pablo.

For nearly two years, though, that Soundcloud single went without a proper physical home on an album. In fact, it wasn’t until earlier this month that Post’s official debut LP — ones featuring appearances from some heavyweights like 2 Chainz and the Biebs himself — dropped on UMG subsidiary Republic Records.

Released as a single back in September, though, the Bieber-featuring “Deja Vu” just might be the best track from the long awaited LP. Hell, it’s kind of factory-made to be. Apt to its name, the song on first listen feels like one you’ve heard before — namely Drake’s wildly massive “Hotline Bling.”

After repeat listens, however, it’s obvious “Deja Vu” is its own thing — and something new entirely. It finds common ground between the acoustic guitar-driven trippiness of “White Iverson,” the grown-up Bieber’s EDM-loving pop and Drake’s pop superstar swagger and ingenuity.

It’s equal parts familiar and fresh, ultimately hitting the ideal goal for a single meant to drive a debut album that’s been released on the back of big breakthrough internet single. Does it sound enough like “White Iverson” to satisfy those who loved him first? Totally. But it also serves its purpose of introducing the rest of the world to Post Malone, too.

Fortunately for our Young Posty, “Deja Vu” is full of star-making power.
